Diagrammatic Re-codification of Probability Theory: A Representational Epistemological Study
نویسنده
چکیده
It is claimed that the current representations used for probability theory provides a poor codification of that knowledge. The limitations of the representations and how they encode the knowledge causes conceptual difficulties and makes problem solving difficult. Probability Space diagrams constitute a new representational system that provides a simpler and more coherent codification of probability theory, which effectively supports problem solving. The two approaches are contrasted, which demonstrates that the effects of representations on advanced forms of cognition extend beyond problem solving and impacts on the conceptual understanding and learning of bodies of knowledge.

Probably Good Diagrams for Learning: Representational Epistemic Recodification of Probability Theory
The representational epistemic approach to the design of visual displays and notation systems advocates encoding the fundamental conceptual structure of a knowledge domain directly in the structure of a representational system. It is claimed that representations so designed will benefit from greater semantic transparency, which enhances comprehension and ease of learning, and plastic generativi...
متن کاملA Conceptual Analysis of Epistemological Pre-assumptions of Floridi’s Theory of Information Ethics
Background and Aim: This paper aims at conceptual analysis of epistemological pre-assumptions of the theory of “Information Ethics” to provide better understanding about this macro-ethics theory and offer a critical standpoint about some of its pre-assumptions. Methods: A documentary method and a conceptual analysis were used. This research method and approach is best suited to explore pre-assu...
متن کاملIntegrating Human Abilities With The Power Of Automated Scheduling Systems: Representational Epistemological Interface Design
An approach is considered to the integration of the flexibility and knowledge of humans with the computational power of automated systems, in the solution of demanding tasks. The Representational Epistemological (REEP) interface design approach advocates designing representational systems that directly encode the structure of the knowledge of the task domain to serve as user interfaces. A case ...
متن کاملWhy Are Some Diagrams Easier to Work With? : Effects of Diagrammatic Representation on the Cognitive Integration Process of Systems Analysis and Design
Various diagrams have been used heavily in systems analysis and design without proper verification of their usability. However, different diagrammatic representations of the same information may vary in the computational efficiency of working with these diagrams. The objective of this research was to explore the effects of diagrammatic representations on the task of integrating multiple diagram...
متن کاملComponents of a Cognitive Theory of Problem Solving and Discovery with Law Encoding Diagrams
The representational components for a cognitive theory of Law Encoding Diagrams, LEDs, are considered in this paper. Examples of problem solving and scientific discovery with LEDs are discussed and used to introduce the four schemas that appear necessary to account for the many different forms of reasoning that are possible with this class of representational systems. Possible forms of processi...
